Why Choose India and Hyderabad for Your IVF Journey: A Guide for International Patients
Travelling abroad for fertility treatment is a significant decision. Alongside medical questions, you may be thinking about visas, accommodation, food, language, privacy and time away from work. I am Dr. Munawwer Sana, a fertility and menopause specialist at Apollo Fertility, Kondapur, Hyderabad. My aim is to help you understand your options, prepare realistically and feel supported throughout treatment. India, and Hyderabad in particular, can offer an accessible setting for fertility care, but choosing a destination should begin with medical suitability, legal eligibility and confidence in your treating team.
Why consider India for fertility care?
India has experienced fertility specialists and centres with modern embryology laboratories, where eggs, sperm and embryos are handled. IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, involves fertilising eggs with sperm in a laboratory and transferring an embryo into the uterus. Some patients need IVF; others may benefit from simpler treatment. I begin by asking what is appropriate for you, rather than assuming that travelling for fertility care means you necessarily need IVF.
Assisted reproductive technology services in India are regulated under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021, together with applicable rules and subsequent notifications. ICMR guidelines have also helped shape standards for fertility care. Current law and binding regulatory requirements take precedence over older guidance. International patients should choose a registered ART clinic and ask about informed consent, record keeping, laboratory practices, counselling and the arrangements for handling concerns or complications.
A good laboratory is more than a list of equipment. Embryologist experience, quality control, reliable identification of eggs and embryos, controlled storage conditions and clear documentation all matter. Ask why a particular technique is recommended and whether it offers a meaningful benefit in your circumstances. Modern technology can support treatment, but no laboratory, doctor or destination can guarantee pregnancy. Age, egg and sperm factors, uterine health and other medical conditions influence the outcome.
Why Hyderabad?
Hyderabad combines a major medical ecosystem with international connectivity. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has direct connections with several Gulf cities, although routes and schedules change. This can make travel more manageable for patients coming from the Middle East. When booking, consider baggage allowances, ticket flexibility and whether you may need to extend your stay. Airport transfers also require planning: travel time to Kondapur varies with traffic, so avoid scheduling a clinic appointment immediately after landing.
As a medical hub, Hyderabad offers access to specialist consultations, diagnostic services, pharmacies and hospitals. Kondapur is an established area with accommodation, restaurants and everyday conveniences. Staying within a practical distance of the clinic can reduce fatigue during monitoring visits. I suggest prioritising reliable transport, cleanliness, a lift if needed and access to meals over sightseeing opportunities or the lowest room rate.
Many international visitors find Hyderabad culturally familiar, particularly those travelling from the Gulf. Urdu is widely spoken in parts of the city, and halal food is widely available; confirm certification or preparation practices if these are important to you. Hyderabad has longstanding cultural links with the Arab world, but Arabic fluency should not be assumed at every clinic or hotel. Request language assistance in advance and confirm whether an interpreter can be arranged.
As in any large city, sensible safety precautions are important. Use reputable accommodation and authorised taxis or established app-based cab services, share journey details when appropriate and keep copies of travel documents. Hyderabad can be very hot in summer, rainy during the monsoon and milder in winter. Plan for hydration, breathable clothing and comfortable transport. Weather may affect comfort, but the best treatment timing depends primarily on your clinical plan.
Your treatment pathway with me
I encourage international patients to begin with an online telehealth consultation, subject to applicable telemedicine rules. This allows us to discuss your fertility history, previous treatments, menstrual pattern, medical conditions and priorities before you commit to travel. Where a cross-border consultation has limitations, I will explain what requires an in-person assessment or input from your local doctor. An online discussion is a planning step, not a substitute for every examination or investigation.
For report review, please provide previous fertility records, ultrasound findings, hormone tests, semen analyses, operation notes and details of earlier IVF cycles, if applicable. Include prescriptions, allergies and information about any frozen eggs, sperm or embryos. Both partners' medical histories may be relevant. I review what is already available before recommending further tests, although some investigations may need repeating because of their timing, quality or legal requirements.
We then plan the visit around your likely treatment needs and menstrual cycle. A typical IVF visit may involve roughly two to three weeks in Hyderabad for ovarian stimulation, monitoring, egg collection and, when appropriate, a fresh embryo transfer. This is an estimate rather than a guaranteed schedule. Some patients need longer, and others need separate visits. A frozen embryo transfer, additional investigation or recovery from a complication can change the timetable.
During stimulation, prescribed medicines encourage several eggs to develop. Ultrasound scans, sometimes alongside blood tests, guide treatment. Eggs are collected during a procedure with appropriate sedation or anaesthesia, and fertilisation takes place in the laboratory. Depending on your circumstances, embryos may be transferred or frozen for later use. Freezing all suitable embryos may be recommended for safety or treatment reasons; it should not automatically be viewed as a setback.
Before you leave, I explain medication instructions, pregnancy-test timing and the follow-up plan. Online follow-up can help us review results and discuss next steps, while examinations and urgent concerns require local medical care. If pregnancy occurs, you will need appropriate monitoring and ongoing obstetric care. Severe abdominal pain, marked swelling, breathlessness, fainting or heavy bleeding require urgent assessment rather than waiting for a video appointment.
Legal and visa planning for foreign nationals
Before booking flights, verify the appropriate medical visa or e-medical visa requirements for your nationality and treatment purpose through official Indian government channels. A companion may require a separate medical attendant visa. Eligibility, permitted stay and documentation can change. Ask the clinic what supporting paperwork it can provide, but remember that visa decisions rest with the relevant authorities. Do not assume that a tourist visa is suitable for planned treatment.
The clinic may request passports, valid visas, marriage documents where applicable and other identity or eligibility records. Names and dates should match across documents. Ask whether translated, certified or authenticated copies are needed before travelling. Eligibility depends on the treatment, current law and individual circumstances, so nationality, age, marital status and the proposed treatment should be discussed early rather than after arrival.
Donor treatment and surrogacy are distinct legal issues. Donor eggs or sperm are subject to the ART Act and applicable rules, including requirements concerning registered banks, screening, consent and records. Surrogacy is separately regulated under the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021, and is not generally available to foreign nationals; commercial surrogacy is prohibited. Do not assume that eligibility for IVF includes eligibility for donor treatment or surrogacy. Verify current rules with the clinic and, when needed, an appropriately qualified legal adviser.
Hotels and longer stays near Kondapur
Accommodation near Kondapur ranges from simple hotels and serviced apartments to full-service luxury properties. As an approximate planning guide, budget options and some serviced apartments may cost INR 2,500–5,000 per night, mid-range hotels approximately INR 5,000–10,000, and luxury hotels approximately INR 12,000–30,000 or more. These are indicative ranges, not quotations. Rates change with season, availability, room type, length of stay and included services; taxes may be additional.
For a two-to-three-week visit, a serviced apartment with a kitchenette and laundry facilities may be helpful. Check housekeeping standards, cancellation policies, refrigeration arrangements if medicines require them and the actual journey to the clinic. Some lower-priced properties may be farther away or offer fewer services. A flexible booking can be more valuable than a non-refundable discount when treatment dates are not yet confirmed.
Flights, transport and everyday expenses
For initial budgeting, return economy airfare from Gulf cities may be approximately USD 250–700 per person. This is only a broad estimate: departure city, airline, season, baggage and last-minute changes can move fares outside that range. Compare flexible fares and check whether your travel insurance excludes fertility treatment or related complications. Include companion travel, visa charges and the possibility of an extended stay in your budget.
Local taxis and app-based cabs are practical for clinic visits. Allow for repeated journeys rather than only airport transfers, and confirm pickup arrangements after procedures. Meal costs vary considerably between local restaurants, delivery services and hotel dining. A kitchenette can help with familiar food and dietary preferences. Keep a contingency fund for additional tests, medicines, accommodation or medical care, rather than spending your entire budget on the initial treatment estimate.
Understanding treatment costs
IVF in India typically costs a fraction of what patients may pay in many Western and Gulf countries, but this is not universal. Comparisons depend on what is included, the treatment required and travel expenses. I prefer to provide an individual treatment recommendation and quotation after consultation rather than advertise a fixed figure that may not reflect your needs. Affordability should never replace attention to safety, ethical practice or appropriate care.
Ask for an itemised estimate covering consultations, monitoring, medicines, egg collection, anaesthesia, laboratory procedures and embryo transfer. Clarify whether freezing, storage, later frozen embryo transfer or any recommended additional testing is charged separately. Not every patient needs every technique. You should understand the evidence, expected purpose and cost of optional additions before consenting. Also ask how costs are handled if a cycle is cancelled, postponed or does not reach embryo transfer.
What to prepare and pack
Carry your passport, visa, requested civil documents, medical reports and clinic contact details in both accessible digital and paper formats. Bring a complete medication list and medicines in their original labelled packaging, with prescriptions where required. Check airline and customs requirements for injections, needles and temperature-sensitive medicines. Do not freeze medicines or assume that every product needs refrigeration; follow the specific storage instructions given by your care team.
Pack comfortable clothing, walking shoes, essential toiletries, a phone charger and a suitable plug adaptor. Arrange reliable internet access for communication and follow-up. Before travel, discuss existing conditions and routine medicines with your doctors, and avoid starting supplements or stopping prescriptions on your own. Plan work leave, childcare and companion support. After sedation or anaesthesia, you will need appropriate assistance and must follow the team's restrictions on driving and other activities.
Emotional support during treatment
Fertility treatment can bring hope alongside uncertainty, particularly when you are away from home. I encourage patients to discuss how much information they want to share with relatives and who can offer practical support. Counselling can help with difficult decisions, disappointment and relationship strain. It is not a sign of weakness. You do not have to remain cheerful all the time, and ordinary anxiety does not mean that you have caused treatment to fail.
Myths and facts
Myth: travelling abroad guarantees better results. Fact: a destination may improve access or affordability, but outcomes still depend on individual medical factors and the quality of care. Myth: every international patient needs IVF. Fact: an assessment may identify other appropriate options. Myth: the most expensive package must be the best. Fact: useful treatment is personalised and evidence-based, not simply the package with the most procedures.
Myth: transferring more embryos is always better. Fact: multiple pregnancy can create serious risks for the pregnant patient and babies; embryo-transfer decisions should prioritise safety. Myth: a two-week itinerary works for everyone. Fact: treatment response and the need for freezing or further assessment can alter plans. I would rather help you prepare for these possibilities than offer a timetable or outcome that medicine cannot guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I start planning before travelling to India? A: Yes. An initial telehealth consultation and report review can help clarify possible treatment, missing information and travel timing, subject to applicable rules. Final decisions may require an in-person assessment.
Q: How long should I stay in Hyderabad for IVF? A: Roughly two to three weeks is a common planning estimate for an IVF stimulation cycle, but it is not suitable for everyone. Frozen transfers, additional investigations or safety concerns may require a different schedule or another visit.
Q: Does my partner need to travel with me? A: This depends on clinical needs, sample arrangements, consent requirements and applicable law. Please confirm before booking. Do not assume that a remotely signed consent or a previously stored sample will meet every requirement.
Q: Will language and dietary needs be manageable? A: Many visitors find Hyderabad welcoming, with Urdu spoken in parts of the city and halal food widely available. Confirm individual dietary requirements and request Arabic interpretation in advance if needed.
Q: Can I fly home immediately after embryo transfer? A: Many patients can travel after transfer, but timing should be individualised. Recovery after egg collection, symptoms and the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation may affect advice. Confirm fitness to travel, medication arrangements and access to follow-up before departure.
